So in my latest ordeal, while reassembling the engine I pulled the threads out of a couple of the oil pump's bolts! :x

Being a high pressure point, this issue must be fixed correctly or there will be an ever flowing oil leak going on right in front of the header collector.

Bought me a thread insert kit for the particular thread which consists of the inserts, correct size tap and insert installation "tool". This tool is basically a bolt with a sharp starting thread instead of the tapered starting thread on a regular bolt. That serves as the "driver" to bring the insert all the way in.

So did you use red thread lock on those?

No. The helicoil does "expand" a bit once installed and the sharp "end" tends to bite into the bore preventing it from just coming out with the bolt upon removal. A plain solid insert would required locktite to keep from coming out if you "bottomed out" the bolt against it. Also, using it on helicoils would tend to lock the coil with the bolt too and possibly forcing the coil to come out with it upon removal thus messing the case thread even worse. :-k
