"Breaker breaker Buddy Bro!"

So some of you, as in the hard core very few who do go on group outings know, I have been experiencing serious issues with the Dormy's CB radio. Could hear others some of the time but could not talk over it unless I was "hitching a ride" on someone else's bumper!

After spending the big $$$ on a much better unit at Flying J in Ehrenburg, AZ on our way to Lake Havafew, it was determined that my antenna was the actual item giving me trouble.

So on this past long assed trip to the Twin Lakes we stopped at the first big Truck Stop and I got juan of thems kickass truck antennas! Though that did the trick and I now could pester the guys over the airwaves, The only place to install it was over the towel bar on the front bumper. Worked well but I did not like the look plus the nasty bracket chewed the paint right off it. Not to mention that it still needed the wire to go through the window, which is how the last 2 antenna wires got messed up. Also, the new main unit is much bigger than the tiny old one and just did not fit on the parcel tray. So it needed to find a better place to be.

Finnally got some time to work on this project and the "heat" wasn't as hot as it has been this week so I went at it yesterday. First, pix of the bumper chewing antenna bracket as it was:






Drilled and tapped the top passenger side door hinge.





It came up to 81" which will be "okay" to stay on pretty much permanently since the door for the "drive-through" goes to 80". So while it does ding it, once it passes that it clears everything else!


Next I decided to install the unit under the driver's seat. As you can see in the pix, it "clears" most everything so it is safe.








Finally, relocated the microphone to be next to the seat for easyer access.

Interesting.

Not everyone has the super plush seats like you, tho. Not much room under a stock seat.

What did you do with the antenna cable? Down under then up into the cavity below the seat? Or still going thru the window?

do the antennas work good if laying horizontal? I have never tried.

Also if it was known it was the antenna, I have one that I would have given you.

The clamp-on bracket that came with the antenna was gawdy looking plus it sat so high that the tip of the antenna hit the door and the frame of the "drive through". So I made a bracket that was slender and sat lower just enough to clear the "issues".

Also, the RED FireStik at the top of it is said to make it "tuneable" but I can't even begin to imagine how extending it by a mere half inch can make any difference whatsoever!

I'm thinking that could like a "choke" and change the SWR of the antenna to help increase the performance and try to get the impedance matching closer to 1:1, a mobile whip antenna (Omni) is usually not very balanced and depending on it's impedance can have a pretty significant reflected wave even so much as to have out of phase currents. Otherwise it could actually just be lengthening the antenna slightly and if you had a SWR meter you could see significant improvements in the gain at a specific frequency (resonant or throughout the band).

Antenna theory is quite complex, and when you add coax feeding it, oddball impedances, and different frequencies, it can get complicated very fast.

I'm only smart enough to know that I don't know much about it, even though I worked in Radio Frequency Engineering for 15 years...

The exposed wire was exposed when the antenna fell off my roof. The plastic cover was peeled off. Still works well.
