This article was posted on thedrambadotcom a little while back but I just finally had time to read it. It is extremely well put together and understandable in plain English. Also dispells the most common myths respecting the VW engine cooling fan.

Well, which cooler set up are you talking about, the T3 replacing the original or the extra 8-pass cooler sitting on the side? :???:

Was afraid you'd say that. I don't really have pix of it by its lonesome but if you search for pix of my "motor" you'll see where the lines route to it. Picture this: it sits in the engine compartment opposite the battery, has a hole hacked under it with a small ricer radiator fan sucking air out for cooling. Not having that hack, there really isn't any good place inside the compartment for any cooler to do, well, any cooling! This is why most people install them on the outside or underneath.

Now, to tell you the truth, I keep it hooked up mostly for the increased oil capacity rather than any cooling effect. I've by-passed it to test this and did not see any significant difference in cooling. Also, just for the hell of it, I do not run the fan during winter as my engine runs extremely cool as it is.

However, I did notice a slight improvement in using the T3 cooler! Hope this helps.

I know we've been through this before but, why are you overly concerned with extra cooling? If you build your engine properly there should not be any issues. :-k

Im just adding it for extra oil capacity, filtering, cooling, and insurance. I also wanted to see the steel braided lines the way you routed them, are they do they have AN fitting's ...

Steel braided teflon lines come out of the pump into the cooler, to the filter, then back into the engine. The return line runs between (and away from) the #3 & #4 exhaust tubes. No heater boxes here. The first picture shows the electric fan under the cooler. The rubber cover under it helps in keeping crap flinging from the tire into the engine compartment. Not to mention water and yet more debris when it rains.

That's ^^^ the hacked doghouse to fit the T3 cooler.

This one^^ shows the present set up. Notice the breather box. It's set up just as the "non box" above, just 2 hoses from the box to both carbs. There is NO OTHER hose from a valve cover or anything else and my engine "leaks" are same as any air cooled one out there, the normal little occasional drop.

I used the Setrab Twin pack and sectioned bus vents to make air scoops for it.

The angle the cooler sets makes the scoops perfectly level with the ground . . . seems to work well.
