Took the engine over to Dennis at Moonlight and after inspecting the heads and case he recommended the following.

1. Remove the piston rods and he will check and straighten them.
2. Replace all rod bearings without opening the case.
3. Replace the piston rings
4. He will clean up the heads and pistons
5. Put it all back together and it should be good to go.

This feels like an inexpensive way to get the bus running again and give myself time to save and plan for a new engine.

Sounds like a good plan, Dennis knows what he's talking about.

OK I am the least capable mechanic on this site, but how is this...

...possible to do? Two small bolts impaled in the piston and head? Grind them smooth and JB weld?
My old brain is having a hard time understanding this.
I do not question that it can be done, but how?

Trying to order the replacement bearings on line but not sure of size. Will any of these numbers tell me what size I have.

On the piston arm stamped at various places
311
11B
6311B
F34

On the bearings
MM908. ( the second M is not really an M more of a shape)
STD
PL18132
BB2121

On the rod bearings the OD is always standards, it is the ID, the size of the rod journal on th crank, that varies. So if your current bearings are stamped STD that means your rod journals are standard and you need to order standard rod bearings.
The damage to the piston and head must not have been severe enough to cause a crack so I assume he thinks they are usable as is. The small amount of displacement from the imprint probably doesn't affect the CR too much.

The bus is back on the road. Dennis was able to replace my rod bearings without splitting the case. Then I piled all the parts into the bus and had AAA tow it over to Ivan’s. It took all day Friday, but it ended with me driving home.

Much thanks Ivan, I learned a lot.
