OK so I am new to generators. Every VW I have own has had an alternator.

So driving into work this morning I noticed the warning light was a little brighter than usual but it was going in and out. Like flickering but not full brightness. No lights on and it is fine. Tonight I was driving back from dinner and noticed that once the RPMs got high (maybe 3k or higher) that the light would become really bright almost as if the engine wasn't running. If I let the RPMs drop then the light goes off.

What is going on and how to fix it?

If you have a spare voltage regulator put in on and see if that helps.
also check the brushes, they might need replacing,
if you look at the armature on the geny if it it looks dark and not shinny
it may need to be cleaned with some fine sand paper.

Sounds like a bad voltage regulator.

Yes please. My other option is a guy on TheSamba that is selling used ones for $25 plus shipping. I don't want to pay $80 for a new one.

And yes Ivan. I am working on gathering all the parts I need to do the conversion. Money is tight since I am spending $3k on my wife's car to get the trans fixed.

I don't mind used ones. I just hope you are going to charge me less than what the other guys wants.

OK so when I fixed the distributor issue I had I decided to swap some shims to tighten up the belt since it was bouncing. After I did that and started it up, I was hearing a noise coming from the generator. Nothing changed in the way that the light was acting but there was a sound like bad bearings or something. I swapped the shims back and there was no more sound. If I spun the gen backwards, it made an obvious clicking noise. On the 12v gen I have, I spun it backwards and there was almost no clicking noise. Could my issue be the gen or do you still think it is the regulator?

So Dan was right on this one. I stopped by Chris Cross' house tonight to get the regulator and also buy his 6v generator in case it was needed and I didn't have to make 2 trips. Of course the first thing I would try is the easiest one to swap out which would be the regulator. After swapping it out and putting the carb back on. I fired her up and no light at high RPMs. Also noticed that the lights in general seem to be brighter. \:D/

So thank you again Chris!
