Juan of the many "signals" that the Dormy was screaming so as to get my attention, was a broken speedo cable. So, among other things I did to take care of it, was install a new cable. Well, after a few measly miles it broke too!!!

Bought another one but upon install decided to "test" it and found that the speedo had frozen which is why the cables broke. Took it to work and managed to get it loose. As I was oiling it also decided to just take it apart and make sure that it'd be totally oiled and running good after some 15+ years. See, I had done this to it before. Anyway, having it apart was a good time to replace the extremly faded colored films for the oil, generator, high beam & signal lights. Brother Elvis had handed out sets of amber, red, green & blue strips of film a while back so I dug them out and went for it. As my usual dare to be different, I used my own purple film for the signals. Looks like a Christmas tree now!

While at it, I noticed this faded date stamped on the back of the dial. Being that it is off a '65, I'm guessing the date is "NOV 13 1965", or "15 1963"!?! :???:

Anyway, figured I'd stamp it with not just my own "fix" date but also my old Navy inspection stamp!

Nice job on the speedo, is it difficult to do that without hurting the bezel?

Well, you know, pink = tit-cancer and all that! :-s

They actually look red when installed. :???:

It is more of a pain to just remove the speedo without removing the tray! :x

However, semi-gently and very carefully prying the bezel with a fine flathead screwdriver does the trick. "Crimping" it back without the proper German tools can be accomplished with small channel lock pliers. Fortunately, the actual shape of the bezel allows for it to be crimped without showing any marks once installed.

On a side note, I've also done the Bug's speedo... TWICE! :-x

Since I was at work at the time, I used some film found there and didn't like the end result. The red was so bright that it looked like the light was on ALL THE TIME!

Much like this one I just found in thedrambadotcom's gallery. :-/
