My front brakes worked OK. They screached and groaned a bit but they stopped "just fine". I never had a fade issue. They would pull to the side but that was just a hose, right? The backing plates were just a little damp.
Before my big trip I opened them up for the first time...ever. What did I find?

I am surprised that things worked at all. Everything was soaked in brake fluid. Everything was replaced. Backing plates, cylinders, shoes, springs, hardware and the rubber hoses.

You'd be surprised that more often than not, drum brakes tend to "lock up" rather than slip when wet with brake fluid! :-o

I agree since I have had the front passenger wheel lock up due to the shoes being wet with brake fluid.
