The story.
When I was a student at SDSU in the mid-70s I worked in the Extended Studies department. One program we administered was offering classes to active duty military at on-base locations. One of the directors of that program was a retired Navy F-4 pilot.
His story.
Early in his career he was on temporary shore duty on Guam. The Navy was trying to reactivate a series of buildings that were abandoned 20-30 years earlier. His assignment was to do a walk through of the buildings and compile a list of needed repairs. He had a sailor with him to act as scribe and note taker.
They unlocked a work space and observed many bare heavy gauge wires dangling from the roof. It appeared that some piece of equipment had been removed. The officer turned to the sailor and said "these are the things we need to fix before someone gets hurt." And he pointed at the dangling cable. His index finger got within about 6 inches of the bare cable before an arc jumped. Fortunately the sailor thew a body block at him to get him away from the wire. Probably saved his life.
On the wall next to his desk at SDSU was a retirement plaque saying farewell to the "Finest Nine Finger Phantom Pilot in the US Navy".
